The Duddon Valley Local History Group (DVLHG) was formed in the early 1990s and runs a programme of activities and talks for its members.

Our five year long study of the whole valley has restarted extending the survey to cover areas not walked in earlier phases. Our findings led to our current major project with Oxford Archaeology North excavating three medieval longhouse sites near Seathwaite Tarn.

Joseph & Eleanor Gunson Almshouse Trust

Founded in 1907 and constructed in 1914 to provide housing for those in need and of good character who were born in Ulpha or resided in the area of benefit prior to the appointment. The Trustees are responsible for ensuring the continued availability of this valuable community asset, the only Almshouses in Copeland and possibly the Lake District National Park.

Architectural Features
The cottages are noted in the current edition of Pevsner’s Buildings of England, Cumbria. As an architectural composition the almshouses are good and they sit very well on the landscape, adding to the identity of Ulpha.

Project
To undertake work to enable compliance with Environment Agency discharge criteria for the foul water system & to bring the property in line with current building regulations making it warm, safe, secure and comfortable and improve sustainability for the residents now and into the foreseeable future, ensuring the continued availability of low cost housing in Ulpha and the maintenance of a vibrant inclusive community.

Phase 1
